And so it (Hallyu) begins… again… only via mobile. heh. Seriously though, “Hallyu” (the “Korean Wave”) was largely an Asia phenomenon, but if Wonder Girls, and I’m sure other k-pop stars down the line, hitting the US via channels like the insanely popular Tap Tap game could be just the thing to kick start a true “Western” invasion, so to speak. ie: succeed in the West in a way Rain has not. More power to them. w00t!

so true. But the elements are there. Though SK is great at lining em up and dropping the ball big time… if they did manage to have the left hand (sktelecom) talk the right hand (cyworld) in a way that didn’t suck (eg: Nate connect), they’d be a pretty tough contender for the crown.

Its a good move for Android to follow (?) Apple’s move on this. Google held its ground in China for search (SEARCH!!) and with the real-name thing for YouTube, so its not surprising they shut-down games category rather than get pushed around by the GRB. They will take a hit from it at first, but with Apple AND Google cutting of the biggest category for apps… this may very well be the wake-up call or catalyst to the games rating board going down. Its just not viable in today’s and the coming platform based mobile markets.

That said, never underestimate how much pressure and influence interest groups (online and off) can have to push (antiquated) policy given how how freakin nutz digital natives in Korea can be about stuff (eg.: online bashing, spamming, hacking, throwing bloggers in jail, electing Presidents, dying from playing video games, etc). Or underestimate Korea’s protectionist policies and actions, with 4,000,000 million apps (many games) that HAVE been approved by the GRB waiting to be unleashed (ref: one app store to rule them all: http://www.kmixx.com/2010/03/unified-korea-app-store/ ), Korean mobile market has reason to clear a path for its own stuff.

nice review of Twestival Seoul, sean. Sux that there wasn’t enough networking at the event.. .which is ironic, considering a big part of twitter is about networking. but whatever. Cool!

You know, someone on the Twitter app developer side (eng) of the fence should really be keeping tabs on new me2day services. In much the same way, Korea portals and internet services were mined for ideas, there just well be some great ideas that could be ported back to Twitter instead of the cloning that happens from Twitter to me2day/Korean Twitter services. Regardless, even among the limited number of services, there will be something cool to come down the pipes. That nOone service is actually pretty cool and I haven’t seen any 3rd party Twitter services that do that (let us know).

I’d say perhaps up until recently, Korean search engines and portals were (or should have been) a rich source of new idea for “western” search engines and portals and web services and sites to draw from (those who could read Korea or had access to the market).

For example, YahooAnswers is a near direct port of Naver’s KnowledgeSearch, Google’s Universal Search is way too coincidentally similar is scope and nature to Korean portals long standing default 통합검색 or “Combined search” results page layout, and of course, Social network sites like Cyworld and Iloveschool predate Facebook by years, etc etc ecetera…

The flow of services seems to reversed significantly in recent years (more internet services ideas seem to be coming into Korea rather than out). That is probably a function of the difficulty most outside of Korea have breaking through the “Korean walled-garden”, as well as, well a shortage of original cool, killer Korea internet / IT services, but that notwithstanding, perhaps me2day 3rd party services may be one (relatively) small corner of the digital market worth that foreign-based, twitter 3rd party wannabe companies should be scouting. Its early enough that you’ll basically have first dibs. Heck, even down-the-road… if history is any indication, there just aren’t many people willing to even try so, they will have defacto exclusivity to anything coming down the me2day developer pipeline.. ^^
